Beginner’s Guide to Sex Toys

selection of sex toys on table

Sex toys, although becoming more commonly and openly discussed than ever, can be intimidating. With all the different types of toys from vibrators, cock rings and sleeves, to wands, it can be incredibly difficult to know where to start.

Our beginner’s guide to sex toys aims to simplify all the jargon and confusion to give you a basic view of where to start your sex toy journey.

What exactly is a sex toy?

The Cambridge Dictionary defines a sex toy as ‘an object used to provide or increase sexual pleasure’. This means that if something is designed and used to be used for sexual pleasure, it’s a sex toy. Simple.

But sex toys can come in all shapes and forms and have plenty of different features to satisfy everyone’s specific tastes and attractions.

Some basic examples of sex toy types and features are:

Luckily, these toys are generally sectioned in stores and online by the person likely to use them. For example, dildos and vibrators, although can and are used for male stimulation, are primarily designed for clitoral or vaginal use.

Standard toys

If you’re looking to get your first sex toy, or just learn about what’s available, we recommend checking our examples below…

Male toys

Male toys are primarily considered sex toys which stimulate the penis and P-spot (prostate). Toys like strokers, P-spot stimulators, anal toys, and cock rings are the most common types of toys sold to males.

Strokers – Are considered toys which wrap around, or slide onto the penis to provide stimulation all over the shaft. Some toys come with different vibration modes, suction stimulation, or even realistic vaginal and anal holes.

Anal Vibrator P-Spot Rocker Black

P-spot stimulators – Very similar to dildos, P-spot stimulators are specifically designed to stimulate the male prostate. These can again have different vibration modes but also come in a wide range of shapes and sizes so users can find the fit best for them.

Cock Rings – Sometimes used during sex with a partner, cock rings help to increase the size and duration of an erection by keeping blood in the penis. Some also come with clitoral stimulating features, so they often also fall into the ‘couples toys’ category of sex toys.

Some of our favourite male toys: Discreet Blow Job Masturbation Stroker, Anal P-spot Rocker, The Oh! Cock Ring.

Female toys

Female toys are often toys designed to stimulate the clitoris and G-spot. Dildos, vibrators, and rabbits are the most commonly known female sex toys people often encounter.

Dildos – Whether you want a phallic dildo or something more streamlined, dildos are often penis-adjacent-shaped stimulators which aim to stimulate the G-spot. Coming in a wide range of materials, textures, and sizes, dildos are one of the most common types of female toys.

Vibrators – You may have heard of a bullet vibrator or even a wand vibrator. Most female sex toys which vibrate (bar a few) are considered vibrators. Grouped by their stimulation, vibration is a popular way to pleasure nerve endings.

Rabbits – Technically a type of vibrator, rabbits have earned a category of their own. Rabbits are vibrators which also provide clitoral stimulation at the same. The ability to activate both the G-spot and clitoris at the same time makes the rabbit an extremely popular choice for first-time sex toy users.

Some of our favourite female toys: Hummingbird Love Egg, Hush Rabbit Vibrator, 5 Inch Realistic Dildo with Suction Cup Base.

Remember, although toys are often categorised as ‘male’ and ‘female’, everyone can enjoy them, so don’t be afraid to try out any toy which takes your fancy. Even if a toy is classed as a ‘female toy’, there’s no reason a penis-owning individual could not use and enjoy it and vice versa. We encourage you to explore and experiment with various types of toys to find out which is right for you.

Couples toys

Couples sex toys are often toys which offer a combination of both female and male stimulation, sometimes at the same time. These toys can come in many shapes and often look very different to typical male and female toys

Our favourite Couples toys:

The Wish Couples Sex Toy – Gaining its name from its unique shape, the wish toy combines multiple forms of pleasure into a single toy. With two vibrating tongs perfect for nipple, clitoral, and G-spot stimulation, it is ideal for those wanting to experiment with all different forms of stimulation.

Due to its unique shape, the Wish Couples Sex Toy can also be used as a cock ring, providing additional male pleasure and all the added benefits of a traditional cock ring.

Harmony Suction Toy & Cock Ring – If you’re looking for more of a set of toys, the Harmony Suction Toy & Cock Ring has the ideal ‘his and hers’ toys to satisfy both partners in the bedroom.

With a suction toy for both nipple and clitoral stimulation, and a cock ring for penis stimulation, this set allows you to swap and experiment with each other to find out what you both enjoy most.
