3 Types of Mouth Gags and How to Use Them

Mouth gags are a useful domination and restriction tool to spice up your bedroom sessions. If you’re unfamiliar with these devices, we’ve created the perfect easy-read guide to mouth gags to help you find the right type for you.

What are mouth gags?

Mouth gags are a mouthpiece, connected to some sort of head-strapping to keep them in place during use. They can come in more complicated designs, with nipple clamps, full head hoods and other features attached, but today we are going to be focusing on the 3 main types of mouth gags you can find in most adult stores.

How do you use them?

Many people use mouth gags during BDSM play as it’s a useful tool for domination play that restricts the user’s speech, and sometimes breathing to hand over the use of their mouth to their dominant.

Simple steps:

  1. Make sure the wearer consents to wear the gag. Establish a gesture to signal they want the mouth gag off since a safeword cant is used. Try a thumbs-down and thumbs-up gesture to indicate their comfort.
  2. Place the mouthpiece in their mouth and let them take a few deep breaths through their nose to ensure their comfort.
  3. Tie the gag to the wearer, making sure it isn’t too loose or tight.
  4. Finally, ensure you check in with the wearer often during use and always instantly remove the gag if they show signs of discomfort.
  5. Once removed, thoroughly clean the mouthpiece to prevent any bacteria build-up.

Types of Mouth Gags

Ball Gags (Breathable and Non-breathable)

The most recognisable form of mouth gag is the ball gag. Made from a ball mouthpiece and simple strapping, the ball gag is the ideal entry-level gag for beginner BDSM players.

Although the strapping is usually the same for all ball gags, the ball itself can come as either breathable or non-breathable. The difference between these is that a breathable ball gag has holes so the wearer can still breathe their mouth during use, and the non-breathable ball gag is solid, to completely restrict mouth airflow.

For beginners, we recommend using a breathable ball gag. If you’ve never used a gag before, it can be alarming to suddenly lose the ability to breathe through your mouth, so experimenting with a breathable gag first is recommended.

Bite-down Gags

These types of gags are exactly as they sound. Rather than giving the user a ball to block their mouth, these gags provide a rod for them to bite down on.

The aesthetic of these gags makes them popular in puppy and pony play, as you can get bite-down gags with bones or leather rods. When paired with the rest of the outfit, you’ll be living the fantasy in no time.

Bite-down gags can also be useful for pain-play during the use of whips, paddles, or canes. Providing a surface to bite down on can help the receiver manage their pain levels, of course, we always recommend exercising caution during any pain play and not trying it at all if you’re a beginner mouth gag or BDSM player.

O-ring Gags

These forms of gags are different to the other two as they are intended to keep the wearer’s mouth open, rather than restricted. These types of gag are ideal if you’re worried about breath restriction, as your mouth is left unobstructed for breathing.

Ideal for oral sex during BDSM play, O-ring gags force the wearer’s mouth open so the dominant can do with them as they please. As always, remember to check in with the wearer frequently to ensure they’re comfortable at all times.
