Frequently Asked Questions

The word Bondage originates from a term of slavery but is much more modernly referred to as a type of sexual practice. Bondage in terms of a sexual practice refers to consensual sexual play where one partner is physically restrained with a restraint, such as an under bed restraint kit, handcuffs, bondage rope, or tape. The restrained partner may also have some of their sense deprived, such as their sight by being blindfolded, this enables the heightened sensation of other senses such as touch, smell, and taste. Bondage should not be confused with more hardcore play such as BDSM (Dominant and Submissive) where enjoyment may be derived from physical pain, restraint, and humiliation. Bondage is about one person being restrained which can be achieved using numerous bondage items. If bondage is practised correctly with a constant line of communication between yourself and with your partner, there’s no reason bondage should be unsafe.

5 Tips to Make Sure Bondage is Safe

  • Make sure you talk to your partner before embarking on any bondage play. Agree prior to sex on what you’re both comfortable with.
  • Create a safe word. If either partner says this word out loud, it means stop.
  • Start off slowly, even if you want to go in at the deep end. A pair of furry handcuffs or loosely tied bondage rope can be gotten out of fairly easily if required. This is a good place to start. Always use soft ties if you’re just starting out so that the restraints are comfortable and can help you to relax.
  • Always have a pair of trauma scissors to hand which can cut through any knots in bondage rope that can’t easily be undone in case of an emergency.
  • Avoid trying bondage if you’ve taken any substances such as alcohol, especially in the beginning. It’s important to practice safe, sober sex when experimenting with something like bondage play. Always ensure your sex is safe, consensual and sober.Read our full blog on Bondage for Beginners here for more details on keeping bondage safe and introducing it to your sex life.

What does BDSM Stand For? BDSM stands for Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, and Masochism. Bondage is part of BDSM, however, BDSM is different from just Bondage. Bondage refers only to the restraint of someone, where BDSM can include acts of discipline, which can include physical and emotional pain to achieve sexual arousal and gratification.

B Bondage refers to the restraint of a partner which then requires them to fully trust their other partner to ensure they’re safe and comfortable. This release of control to someone else having power over your body can be found to be incredibly erotic and freeing.

D Discipline includes disciplining a partner if they don’t act how you want them to for yours and their pleasure. Discipline styles will vary and can include physical and emotional styles. For example, if someone misbehaves they may then be required to perform a sexual act, or act of embarrassment in front of their dominant partner to show that they’re sorry.

S stands for Sadism. A Sadist is the dominant partner (often referred to as a ‘Dom’ or ‘Dominatrix’) and inflicts pain towards the submissive partner (often referred to as ‘Sub’ ‘The Sub’). The pain and / or humiliation of the submissive partner often gives the dominant partner pleasure leading to sexual gratification.

M stands for Masochism. Masochism is the partner receiving pain, both emotional and physical which can include whipping, spanking and humiliation from the Sadist partner.BDSM allows people in a consensual relationship to explore their boundaries if pain and pleasure, take on new roles in their sex lives and relinquish control, or gain masses of control for their pleasure and sexual gratification. This can be exciting, emotional and arousing.
