5 More Easy Beginner’s Bondage Ropework Shibari Styles

The Shibari bondage rope style allows you and your partner to explore and experiment with different bondage positions and techniques. Whether you use bondage rope or tape, tieing up your submissive and dominating them in the bedroom can be incredibly kinky.

If you haven’t already, we recommend reading our previous blog: Beginner’s Guide to 5 Easy Bondage Ropework Shibari Styles and coming back to this post when you’ve finished.

Why is Shibari popular?

The Shibari ropework style originated in Japan, beginning its life as a form of binding captives for torture. Over time, people have seen the beauty in the ropework style, noting that submissives can be bound tightly or gently with intricate knots.

Safety first. Always.

Whether attempting these beginner bondage ropework styles alone or with a partner, you always need a quick-release plan. A pair of trauma scissors will come in handy if you find yourself stuck, they are also blunt and prevent you from hurting yourself should you need to cut your rope.

Along with trauma scissors being part of your shibari ropework kit, we also recommend having ropes of varying lengths. You don’t want to run out of shibari rope halfway through your bondage!

Let’s get down to the beginner bondage business…

Style 1: Simple Shibari Cuffs

If you enjoy the feeling of cool metal binding your hands, or like to roleplay the naughty policeman/woman fantasy, then traditional hand cuffs might be for you. But you can also create simple and effective hand restraints using rope, which can also leave rope leftover to manoeuvre your submissive or tie their hands to a surface.

How to do it:

Step 1 Create two loops with the rope with the left loop overlapping the right.
Step 2 Manoeuvre the tail of the right loop so it is in front of the start of the right loop, but still behind the entire left loop.
Step 3 This is the tricky bit. Grap the right side of the left loop and the left side of the right loop and pull them through the holes of their opposite loops.
Step 4 Pull the loops tight and you should have a right loop, left loop, and two hanging tails.
Step 5 With the tail of the rope on the right, create a loop with the tail at the back.
Step 6 Grab the top right loop we made earlier and pull it through the bottom loop we just made.
Step 7 Repeat steps 5-6 for the left side.
Sep 8 Pull the tails to tighten the cuffs around your submissive.

Style 2: The Pull Over Cuffs

This style expands on the cuffs we made above. Using a longer length of rope you used for the above beginner ropework style, this style utilises the leftover tails to bind your partner’s hands to their body.

How to do it:

Step 1 Follow the steps in the Simple Shibari Cuffs guide.
Step 2 Lift your submissive’s hands above and over their head so their hands are touching the back of their neck.
Step 3 Using the tails of the rope, wrap the cord in a criss-cross pattern around the chest.
Step 4 Repeat step 3 until you have around 10 inches of rope left on either side.
Step 5 Tie the rope at the back or the front in a simple bow for quick release if needed.

Alternatively…

Step 1 Follow the steps in the Simple Shibari Cuffs guide.
Step 2 Pull your submissive’s hands down in the cuffs towards their legs.
Step 3 Using the tails of the rope, wrap the cord around the body and buttocks in a criss-cross pattern.
Step 4 Repeat step 3 until you have around 10 inches of rope left on either side.
Step 5 Tie the rope at the back or the front in a simple bow for quick release if needed.

Style 3: The Bikini Harness Tie

Maybe not one for the beach, the bikini harness shibari tie frames the chest. It can be used over the top of lingerie to add a little kinky spice and isn’t too daunting for those trying chest bondage ropework styles for the first time.

How to do it:

Step 1 Find the centre bite of your rope and wrap it around the waist, pulling the remaining rope through the loop.
Step 2 Wrap the two cords around the body, just underneath where the previous wrap is.
Step 3 Pull the rope through the right loop created by the doubled-up cord we just wrapped around the body.
Step 4 Pull the cord up and wrap around the upper chest, just underneath the shoulders and pull it through behind the rope we just wrapped on the left.
Step 5 Repeat step 4 but this time pull the cord up through the rope on the right.
Step 6 Pull the cord up and over the right shoulder and pull it through behind the bottom lines of the rope.
Step 7 Pull the cord up and underneath the top lines of rope on the left-hand side and tighten before pulling the rope over the other shoulder.
Step 8 Cross the rope over the vertical lines of rope on the back, pulling it then underneath the top lines of horizontal rope.
Step 9 Pull the rope over the verticle centre lines of rope and up behind the top lines of the horizontal rope.
Step 10 Wrap the cord over the two sets of verticle ropes which go over the shoulders, then pull the tails underneath them, wrapping the cord around the verticle sets. Pull through the loop we just made on the left-hand side.
Step 11 Tug the tope to tighten the knot and finish by wrapping the rope in a weaving pattern up the verticle sets of rope, or tie it off in a bow.

Style 3: The Trouser Leg Bondage Rope Tie

A simple way to cover the legs individually, or bind them together, this style can easily be done solo. It’s the perfect Shibari style to practice your knots without actually restraining yourself if you don’t want to yet.

How to do it:

Step 1 Find the centre bite of your rope and hook it over your big toe.
Step 2 Wrap the tails over the opposite side of your foot above the ankle.
Step 3 Pull the tails up and wrap over the rope again, you should have a single wrap around your ankle.
Step 4 Pull the tails across the lines of rope you’ve made and pull them under and through.
Step 5 You should now have a single simple knot just above your ankle. Pull it tight to remove the slack.
Step 6 Repeat steps 3 – 5 up your leg. You can do this as many times as you like, stop at the knee or bring it up to your thigh.
Step 7 Separate the two cords of rope you have and wrap them around your leg to finish with a bow.

Style 5: The Shinju Chest Bondage Harness

Very similar to the bikini bondage rope harness, this Shibari style covers the chest but with a few more intricate knots to make the harness a touch kinkier.

Step 4 Pull a section of the cord at the base of the knot upwards, holding on to it with your left hand so it doesn’t follow the rest of the cord, pull the cord underneath and through the ropes on the right side of the knot.
Step 5 Still holding that portion of rope in your left hand, pull the remaining cord through that loop and pull it tight.
Step 6 Pull the cord up and wrap it around the upper chest, just underneath the shoulders and pull it through behind the rope we just wrapped on the left.
Step 7 Wrap the cord around the chest again, the opposite way this time, and pull through underneath the bottom two lines of rope on the left side,
Step 8 Pull a section of the cord at the base of the knot upwards, holding on to it with your left hand so it doesn’t follow the rest of the cord, pull the cord underneath and through the ropes on the right side of the knot.
Step 9 Still holding that portion of rope in your left hand, pull the remaining cord through that loop and pull it tight.
Step 10 Pull the cord up and over the left shoulder to the front, pulling it underneath and through the bottom set of ropes. When pulled tight, this will raise the bottom set of rope at the waist into a triangle shape.
Step 11 Wrap the cord behind and over the centre verticle ropes between the two sets of horizontal ropes. Repeat until you reach the top of that section.
Step 12 Pull the rope underneath the top section of the horizontal rope and up and over the remaining shoulder
Step 13 At the back, cross over the cord of the other shoulder strap and pull through underneath the left set of horizontal rope.
Step 14 Wrap the cord over the centre verticle rope which is between the sets of horizontal ropes and pull underneath and through the top set of horizontal ropes on the right-hand side.
Step 15 Wrap the over the top set of verticle rope and pull it underneath through the loop you’ve just made on the right side. Pull this tight.
Step 16 Using the tails of the rope, weave them through the shoulder straps above and finish with a bow.
